Here in the north east the temperatures are frigid and that has us dreaming of our next getaway. Whether you travel by plane, train or automobile, you can remain eco-conscious in your packing and traveling decisions. We've rounded up our top sustainable swaps for all of your travel needs.

packing cubes

1. Packing Cubes

Packing cubes not only help you stay organized while on vacation but can save space in your suitcase. We are big fans of packing cubes but many of the ones on the market use cheap materials that fall apart after one use (or worse, during your trip). Instead, opt for higher quality cubes made from recycled water bottles!

2. Reusable Toiletry Bottles

How many of us take that emergency trip to the drug store right before a vacation because we forgot a travel size of our favorite shampoo or skin care item? Well no more! Buy several reusable bottles, like these silicon ones, and fill from your larger bottles at home. These can easily be rinsed and reused after each trip and are even TSA approved.

toothpaste tabs

3. Toothpaste Tabs

Save space and avoid messy toothpaste explosions by opting for tabs! Toothpaste tabs arrive in recyclable glass bottles and can easily be transferred to a smaller container for travel. Simply chew a tab and then brush as normal.

4. Solid Toiletries

Many of my favorite brands are now offering solid versions of best selling products. Choose a shampoo bar, solid conditioner and bar soap for your next trip. These are great space savers and since many brands package in cardboard, you are cutting down on plastic that can not be recycled. Bonus: no need to take these out for TSA when flying!

5. Reusable Water Bottle

As an avid water drinker, I always have a water bottle near me. I pack one with me whenever I travel so that I can refill it at any fountain and save on expensive plastic bottles. Many coffee shops and cafes will even fill these for you if you ask.

6. Tote Bags

For long trips or trips with your family, pack some tote bags! Take them when you stop to pick up groceries for your AirBNB, or stow your dirty laundry in them for your trip back. The uses are endless and in my opinion, you can never have too many bags.

7. Eco Friendly and Reef Friendly Skin Care

Headed to the mountains or the beach? Consider environmentally friendly alternatives to your traditional insect repellent and sunscreen. Keep the coral reefs safe by choosing a natural sunscreen like this one from Raw Elements. While this fragrance free insect repellent boasts long lasting, family safe protection without the harsh chemicals.
