In a world that is increasingly eco-conscious we are seeing a surge in “green”, “clean” and “natural” beauty and skincare products. Buzzwords like these along with lengthy ingredient lists can make it hard to decipher what is in the product you are using and if it meets your requirements for a quality and earth friendly item. Today I am breaking down what these terms mean and how to choose the best product for your needs.

The basics:

Clean: “Clean” products are made without ingredients shown or suspected to harm human health. These are made without toxic ingredients – whether natural or manmade.

Green: “Green” products are those that are sourced, produced and packaged in a way that is sustainable and kind to the planet. Think fully recyclable packaging, ingredients that are harvested in renewable ways, or products manufactured without the use of toxic chemicals.

Natural: “Natural” products are ones with ingredients found in nature rather than produced in a lab.

These terms are not regulated and the FDA has only banned a handful of ingredients over the years. Brands are now taking it upon themselves to ban harmful ingredients and unsustainable production practices. We are also seeing an increase in transparency as these brands work hard to catch up to the eco-conscious consumer.

Keep in mind that these terms are not interchangeable. For example, a product can be made with all natural ingredients but arrive in plastic packaging that is not recyclable.

So what do you do when you find yourself in the beauty isle staring at an endless number of options? Understanding these terms is key but you will also find that research will set you on the path to success. Are you considering a new to you brand or product? Look it up before you head to the store or write it down to research later. Brands that have nothing to hide will be transparent on their websites, allowing you to search the ingredient lists and packaging materials. The key will be to identify the terms and ideals that are important to you.

Here are some of our favorites for fall:

Hey Humans: A brand on a mission to reduce plastic waste. They use 99% plastic free packaging as well as provide clean, naturally derived, vegan products. The Natural Deodorant is aluminum and paraben free, smells great and actually works to keep you smelling fresh all day.

W3LL PEOPLE:  The original clean beauty pioneers. W3ll People are on a mission to not only provide clean, cruelty-free and gluten-free products but to also be accessible to all, ensuring more people have the ability to choose clean.
